How course activity types interact with automatic zero grading

To run automatic zero for missing submissions, all activities must have grades associations and have a due date setting in the future.

Supported course activities

Supported activity type Triggers automatic zero grade when: Does not trigger automatic zero when:
Assignment file submission
  • The activity submission due date is missed
  • The special access due date for a user is missed
  • Activity is hidden by either visibility rules or a release condition, when the due date passes
  • An activity is exempted for a user, even if the user misses the due date
Assignment text submission
  • The activity submission due date is missed
  • The special access due date for a user is missed

  • Activity is hidden by either visibility rules or a release condition, when the due date passes
  • An activity is exempted for a user, even if the user misses the due date
LTI activity
  • The LTI completion status is not complete or a score has not been received
  • The LTI activity due date is missed
  • An LTI activity is marked as complete or has already been graded before the due date
Asynchronous quiz
  • A user has not submitted any attempts

  • A quiz is in progress but not submitted before the due date
  • A quiz attempt is submitted before the due date

This is the paper note and pencil icon used for notes.
Note: Quizzes already have functionality that automatically grades and sends the result to the Grade book when the time allowed is exceeded. In cases where a learner is attempting a quiz and it is still in progress after the due date, when automatic zero grading is enabled, the quiz is marked as 0 regardless of other timing settings for the quiz. If a learner submits a quiz attempt after receiving an automatic zero, the new grade overwrites the zero grade.

Unsupported course activities

The following course activity types are not supported by automatic zero grading:

  • Synchronous quizzes ( do not have due dates)
  • Discussions (topics do not have due dates)
  • Checklists (do not have a grade association)
  • Surveys (do not have grade associations)
  • SCORM objects (can be configured by administrators to send a grade of 0 to the grade book at any time once a learner has accessed the Object)
  • On-paper and observed in-person assignments (even if assigned a due date, the system is not able to evaluate the timing of the submission)
