About release conditions

Release conditions allow you to create custom learning paths through the materials in your course.
When you attach a release condition to an item, learners cannot see that item until they meet the required condition.
For example, you can hide the second topic in a module until learners view the first topic, require learners to view
a content topic before attempting a quiz, or require them to post to a discussion topic before they see a content module.

If you attach multiple conditions to an item, learners must meet all conditions before they can access it.
For example, you can require learners to view the first three topics in a unit before gaining access to an associated quiz.

Note: Once a
learner
meets a release condition, the condition is cleared for that
learner
and cannot be reset. For example, if a discussion topic requires a score above 60 percent on a quiz, and a
learner
originally receives 72 percent but later has the quiz score adjusted to 55 percent, that
learner
continues to have access because they met the condition at one point.

Requirements

Before you can create or use release conditions, your role must include the required permissions for the relevant tools.
These permissions are managed by your organization administrator.
If you do not see the release condition options in a tool, contact your administrator to confirm your permissions.

Tools that support release conditions

You can attach release conditions to many items in your course.
This allows you to control the timing and visibility of activities and information as learners move through the course.

Release conditions are available for the following tools and items:

  • Assignments
  • Awards
  • Checklists
  • Content modules and topics
  • Custom widgets
  • Discussion forums and topics
  • Grade items and categories
  • Intelligent Agents
  • Announcements items
  • Quizzes
  • Surveys

Special case: NOT release conditions

Some release conditions work by checking whether an action has not been completed.
These are known as NOT conditions. They behave differently from standard conditions and should be used carefully to avoid confusion.

NOT conditions work in the following way:

  • The condition is initially met, making the associated item visible. For example, the learner has not submitted an assignment.
  • Once the learner completes the action, the condition becomes unmet and the item is no longer visible.

Important: Release conditions are evaluated only once, unless the
learner
is removed and re-added to the course, group, or section. This applies to all standard and NOT conditions.

Release condition types

The following table describes all available release condition types and how each one behaves. You can use these conditions to control access to content, track progress, or personalize learning activities based on behavior or achievement.
