Your Mac's Software Update screen may offer two types of updates: a minor update to your current system (e.g., from macOS Sonoma 14.5 to 14.6) and a major upgrade to a new version (e.g., from macOS Ventura to macOS Sonoma).
Minor updates are essential for security and stability. If a major upgrade is also being offered, you do not need to install it to get the important minor updates. Here’s how to choose the correct one.
How to Select the Minor Update
-
Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen.
-
Select System Settings.
-
Click General in the sidebar, then select Software Update.
-
Look for "More Info...": If a major upgrade is being featured at the top of the window (like macOS Sonoma), look for smaller text below it that says "Another update is available." Click the "More Info..." link in this section.
-
Select the Minor Update: A new window will appear showing a list of specific updates. Check the box for the security or minor system update (e.g., macOS Ventura 13.6.4 Security Update).
- Click "Install Now": This will install only the selected items, keeping you on your current version of macOS while ensuring your system is patched and secure.
By following these steps, you can keep your computer protected without committing to a full operating system upgrade, ensuring that all of your current software and workflows remain compatible.
Please note: Major OS upgrades often require administrative permissions and cannot be initiated by standard users. If you need to upgrade to the latest major OS, please contact UCA IT.
