Using Epson iProjection (PC/Mac)

Using Epson iProjection (PC/Mac)

Epson iProjection is used for projecting from a computer or mobile device over the network.

Preparation

Power the projector on and make sure it is set to the "LAN" input. There is a LAN button on the remote that cycles between three different network connection modes - "LAN", "Screen mirroring 1", and "Screen mirroring 2". In order to use the iProjection software, the projector must be set to the input called "LAN".

LAN button

When the projector is set to the "LAN" input, it will display the information necessary to connect your device to the projector -- the IP address and "keyword" (4-digit number) are needed for connecting a PC or Mac, and the QR code is used for connecting mobile devices.

Enter button between directional arrows

If the projector input is set to "LAN" and it is not displaying a QR code, press the ENTER Enter/return key graphic button on the projector remote. This will toggle the QR code display even if another device is already connected and displaying on the projector. (This is helpful for connecting more devices once the classroom PC/Mac is already connected.)

When starting Epson iProjection for the first time, you're asked a series of questions. You may be asked about:

  • Privacy statement (accept the terms)
  • Research usage (either decline or accept)
  • Firewall allowance (allow this for the software to work correctly)
  • Connection mode (choose "Advanced Connection Mode" if asked, and select the checkbox at the bottom that says not to ask this in the future)

Connection mode dialog

If using the app on a Windows computer, there is one more setting that needs to be configured. When the app opens, click the "Set options" button at the bottom of the window and then select the "General settings" tab. The last option on this tab is labeled "Always duplicate these displays". Select this if you want the projected image to be a duplicate of your computer screen. (This is how the vast majority of classrooms are set up.)

Always duplicate checkbox

If instead you want to use the projector as an extended display (similar to a desktop setup with two independent monitors), then leave this unchecked. (This setting is only available on Windows. On macOS, the projector will always duplicate whichever display is your main display.)

Click Apply when finished and close the settings window. You're now ready to connect to a projector.

Connecting

  1. Locate and open the Epson iProjection app. If asked which connection mode to start in, select "Advanced Connection Mode". You can set this as the default for the future by selecting the checkbox toward the bottom.
  2. There are three options along the left side of the window - "Automatic search", "Manual search", and "Profile". When the app starts, any projector discovered on the network will automatically be listed in the "Automatic search" table. Projectors displayed in the table are listed with a factory-programmed 8-character alphanumeric name and their IP address. You can save a discovered projector with a name of your choosing so that it is easier to find in the future by right-clicking it and selecting Register. The projector will then be added to your "Profile" list on the left. You can double-click a projector in this list to select it and then connect to it by clicking the connect button at the bottom of the window.

If you are connected to the wired network and on the same "subnet" (same building) as an Epson projector and it is powered on, it should be found by the automatic search feature. If it is not found automatically, make sure it is powered on and then click the "Manual search" button on the left, then enter the IP address of the projector in the search field.

Once your projector is listed, click the checkbox beside it to select it. You can select and connect to multiple projectors at once. Click the checkbox beside each one you want to connect to.

Select the Connect as a Moderator ... checkbox (recommended) to take control as the moderator. As the moderator, you decide whether to allow others to connect to the projector and how to arrange the participants on screen. You can enable splitscreen mode and allow up to three other people to share their screen simultaneously with you in a 2x2 grid.

Click the Connect button when ready.

  3. If the "keyword" (4-digit number) security feature is enabled on the projector, you will be prompted to enter it when connecting. Enter it and press OK. If you are connecting to multiple projectors, you will be asked to enter the keyword for each one and the order of the prompts may vary. You must ensure that you enter the correct number for each projector, so take note of the number as well as the IP address and/or factory-programmed name of each projector you are connecting to. Keywords change every few minutes until you are connected.

  4. Once it connects the application will shrink down to a window like the one pictured below. Press the indicated button (highlighted in red) to return to the default control screen.

  5. The icons pictured above allow switching between single, dual, and quad (2x2) display modes. If other users connect to the projector, the moderator must choose where to position each connected user on the screen using a click-and-drag action.

In the list view on the left, click on the user or device that you want to allow to project and drag it to one of the four quadrants in the grid view on the right side. If you want to show more than one user screen at a time you must also select either dual- or quad-display mode using the icons above.

If you do not select a display mode other than single display, it will only show the currently selected user. When using dual- or quad-display modes, the moderator must manually arrange where each user projects on the screen by clicking and dragging them to the desired corner. Enabling dual- or quad-display mode will not automatically project connected devices until they are arranged in the grid.

Only the moderator is allowed to arrange the devices on screen. If there is no moderator selected for the session, any connected user can become the moderator by requesting control through the "Become Moderator" button at the bottom. This includes mobile devices that are connected. (When you are the moderator, this button changes to the "Quit as Moderator" button. This allows you to give up moderator control and let someone else drive.) To be on the safe side, it is recommended that you always join as the moderator when starting your class.

  6. If you are the moderator, to kick another user (force them to disconnect), right click on their user/device name in the list view on the left side (not the grid view on the right) and click "Leave". They will be forcefully disconnected.

  7. When you are finished, either close the window, or click the Disconnect menu at the top of the window and select either "Leave" or "Disconnect All". (If you are not the moderator, closing the window will only disconnect your own system. Otherwise, it should disconnect everyone.)

Troubleshooting

Issue Solution
Epson iProjection does not locate the projector during a search
  • Ensure the projector is powered on.
  • Ensure the projector is set to LAN input mode. (Press the LAN button on the projector remote to cycle between "LAN", "Screen mirroring 1", and "Screen mirroring 2" inputs.)
  • If the projector is connected to the wired campus network, ensure that the computer you are using is as well, or that it is connected to the "Domain Wireless" or "UCA Secure" wireless networks (not "UCA Wireless"). If a device is connected to the wired or secure wireless campus networks, it will have an IP address starting with 161.31. While on the LAN input, press the ENTER Enter/return key graphic button on the projector remote to toggle the display of the projector's address information and QR code.
  • If an automatic search does not succeed, try a manual search (you will need to enter the projector's wired IP address in the search box). Automatic search will not work if you are not connected by wire or if you're not located in the same building with the projector. You must be connected by a wire on the same "subnet" with the projector for automatic search to succeed, otherwise a manual search will be required.
