How to use the Ace AI Lecture Enhancer

You can generate interactive polling questions from a single slide, multiple slides, or an entire presentation deck (if this feature is enabled for you). Both multiple choice questions and open-ended discussions are currently supported. All questions are fully editable, allowing you to tailor them exactly to your needs.

  • Single/Multi-Slide: Perfect for when you know exactly where you want specific questions added.
  • Full Deck: A great option if you’re not sure how to get started, or if you want an easy one-click baseline assessment.

Generating Questions from a Single Slide

Step 1: Upload your slides to your course (See: Uploading Slides).

Step 2: Select a single slide from the content tree. In the preview section, click the Generate AI Question button to create a multiple choice question.

(Optional: Users can also generate a discussion question from a single slide, though this feature may not be available for all users yet).

Generating Questions from Multiple Slides

Some users may see an option to select multiple slides and generate an AI question based on combined context. It is highly recommended to select consecutive slides that are related to the same topic so that the input for question creation is consistent.

Once you have selected all the slides, click Generate AI Question. A status bar will appear at the bottom of the screen. Note: This can take a few minutes. Navigating to a different view will not stop the processing; it will continue in the background.

Once processing is complete, Ace will notify you that a new question has been created. Clicking View Question will open the newly created item, or you can find it directly in your content tree.

Note: In some cases, Ace may not be able to create a question due to a lack of contextual content (e.g., if you only selected a title slide). In this case, you’ll see an error message and can try again with different slides.

Reviewing, Editing, or Generating a New Question

We strongly recommend reviewing all AI-generated questions thoroughly before presenting in class. Ace will attempt to select a correct answer, but it may not always be perfectly accurate.

You can edit the question text and answers by clicking the Edit icon on the right side of the preview panel.

If you do not like the AI-generated question at all, click the Generate a new question icon below the existing one. The new question will use the exact same slide(s) as input but attempt a different framing.

Generating Multiple Questions From a Full Presentation

Note: This functionality is not yet available to all users.

We are introducing new functionality that allows instructors to generate a series of interspersed multiple choice questions from a full slide presentation (provided there are no existing Top Hat questions already embedded in the deck).

Steps for New Presentations

  1. Upload your slides to Top Hat using the steps outlined here: Uploading Slides.
  2. Click Enhance Slides in the modal that appears immediately after the upload is complete.

Steps for Existing Presentations

  1. Navigate to an existing set of slides within your course that does not contain any Top Hat questions.
  2. Click on the presentation title in your content tree.
  3. Click the Generate AI questions button in the upper right of the presentation preview panel. Ace will review the presentation and insert multiple choice questions at various points.

  1. Once all steps are completed, a success modal will display details about how many questions were added and provide a Review 1st Question button.

Post-Generation Review Tips

All AI-generated questions will initially display a blue dot in the content tree, indicating that you have not reviewed the question yet. This dot disappears once you open the question.

In addition to the multiple-choice formative assessment questions, Ace will also insert an open-ended reflection question at the very end of your presentation.

Current Limitations

Limitations for Single Slides:

  • Only New Question Builder formats (multiple choice and discussion) are supported. Classic/legacy question types are not supported.
  • Questions may not be generated from title slides, outlines, references, or open-ended prompts.
  • Slides that contain questions with no marked correct answer may cause the AI to "guess" an answer, which must be manually reviewed.
  • Discussion questions generated for STEM content may occasionally be incorrectly framed as closed-ended.

Limitations for Multiple Slides:

  • Only multiple choice questions are supported.
  • Only the last 6 selected slides are considered when generating the question.
  • Content from the selected slides must be thematically consistent. Image-heavy or minimal-content slides may result in low-quality questions.

Limitations for Full Presentations:

  • Only presentations without existing Top Hat questions can be processed.
  • Decks must contain a minimum of 5 slides, up to a maximum of 65 slides.
  • Only multiple choice questions are generated.
  • Question placement may not always align optimally with the slide content and should be reviewed. Structured decks (with clear slide titles and logical flow) result in the most accurate placement.
