This article explains how to navigate Content Spaces in Top Hat, a layout that organizes course content into intuitive areas for both instructors and students. You’ll learn the purpose of each space—My Course, Course Work, and Assigned for Grades—and how to access, assign, and manage readings, homework, and tests.

Content Spaces Overview

Content Spaces provide a dedicated navigation approach, enabling Educators and Students to access specific areas for Readings, Homework, and Tests via the left-hand menu.

  • My Course: The central dashboard and overview of your course.
  • Course Work: The master library of all content, including Textbook Chapters, Questions, Discussions, and Slides.
  • Assigned for Grades: A focused view of all active or scheduled graded items.

My Course Space

The My Course space is the default landing page. It displays a list of available spaces and highlights upcoming items currently assigned as Homework or Tests. You can navigate by clicking the labeled boxes or using the left-hand sidebar icons. Selecting the content items within this space will also take you directly to the content.

Course Work Space

The Course Work space is where you manage your curriculum. You can organize items into folders, rename content, and duplicate materials. From this space, you can choose to either Present content for live participation or Assign it for students to complete outside of class.

Warning: Deleting content from the Course Work space will also permanently remove any associated grades from the Gradebook.

Assigned for Grades Space

This space centralizes everything that contributes to a student's grade.

  • Pinned Tests: Top Hat tests are automatically pinned to the top of the list for quick access.
  • Priority Sorting: Homework items are displayed based on their due date, with the most urgent items appearing at the top.
